Recently Abacus was released on Steam Early Access, featuring (part one of) my chiptune-inspired score. Abacus is a quirky, retro style platformer following a robot on his mission through caverns, deserts, and castles to rescue his friend. Alongside this, the game also features a fast-paced multiplayer deathmatch mode.

Chiptune is challenging music to write. Early gaming systems had very primitive capabilities for sound and music, and composers typically had access to only a few voices capable of producing basic sounds. These limitations led to some of the most famous tunes in gaming, such as Super Mario and Tetris. This long history was on my mind when I began work on Abacus, and I hope I was up to the challenge! Take a listen to the main theme below:

I’ll be going into more detail about the music for Abacus in future updates – stay tuned for more!
